Paper Craft Ideas by Beverley Paine, Nov 1999 There are dozens of books on art and craft in the local library. Some of them offer instructions and some simply explore the work or artisans and crafts people from around the world. All are inspirational and offer lots of ideas for us to follow and build on as a home educating family. Quite often the materials needed can already be found in and around the home, but sometimes I have to make a trip out to buy some relatively inexpensive items. Usually I find these items last years and are well worth the purchase and quite often promote other artistic and crafty endeavours in the children. Many home educating families don't realise what a great resource the local library can be. A while ago, following on from an enjoyable networking group activity where we all made paper aeroplanes of various designs we decided to we wanted to try our hand at origami. I rang the local library earlier and asked for books on the subject and by the time I arrived at the library the librarian had kindly selected several books on all sorts of paper craft and had them ready at the desk! Since then I've used the library like this many times. Often when I borrow lots of books showing many different ideas for art and craft, or any other subject, I take the time out to list the ideas and activities in them. This is a great boon for those days when the children look lost, or I need some enthusiastic activity to cheer me up and replenish my confidence in home education! Over the years my list has grown, and a couple of years ago I included it in my homeschooling manual, Getting Started with Home Schooling; Practical Considerations, for others to use as a springboard for activities. Here are just some of the ideas I put together from the books from the library that one time:
To make paper mache paste use 1 part flour to 3 parts water, and to make pulp mix PVA glue with 1 tbspn of paste (2 parts PVA to 1 part water). Was this article helpful? Was it worth $1.00 to you? and Learning without School! We began educating our children in 1985, when our eldest was five. In truth, we had helped them learn what they need to learn since they were born. I am a passionate advocate of allowing children to learn unhindered by unnecessary stress and competition, meeting developmental needs in ways that suit their individual learning styles and preferences. Ours was a homeschooling, unschooling and natural learning family! There are hundreds of articles on this site to help you build confidence as a home educating family. We hope that your home educating adventure is as satisfying as ours was! Beverley Paine
